One of the constants of owning a vehicle, whether it is a beauty or a clunker, is getting it serviced. Like most machines, a vehicle is prone to malfunction occasionally. Strain on parts are caused by the wear and tear of daily use. Getting the vehicle fixed properly without making a second trip to the repair facility is rarely a simple matter. Technicians do not like for a job to come back.
Before one starts shouting fraud, one has to keep in mind that service technicians have only the information the customer gave them. One has to be clear in explaining what the vehicle is doing or not doing when they are seeking service. You are the only one who drives the vehicle on a daily basis. You are the only one who can advise the technician about what is wrong with vehicle. Being attuned to the vehicle since the day you bought it would be a good place to start. Detecting warning signals before a breakdown may be able to save one from a major breakdown. Is the vehicle making a funny sound? Is a gauge registering a strange reading? Does a warning light stay on? Is a feature not activating properly? What conditions does the problem occur?
When the vehicle requires service, write down the items which you want checked or repaired. Take the time to note any of the symptoms you have noticed. Does the problem occur sporadically or constantly? Before taking the vehicle to shop, call for an appointment. Reliable service shops are very busy and scheduling in advance is the best option. Shops that are not too busy may not be the best ones to do business with.
When you bring your vehicle to service shop, do not just leave it without an explanation of what is wrong. Describe the problem accurately and give the person you’re dealing with a written description of the symptoms of the vehicle. Keep the descriptions as simple as possible. Stick with the facts. Do not offer opinions. The person at the front desk person passes the work order to the technician. Be sure to keep a written copy of the symptoms.
If you are sure about the problem, have the shop draw up a service order. Be sure that order has only necessary vehicle service, before you authorize any repairs. If you are unclear about the problem, have the service technician perform a diagnosis. Ask the shop to call you before any service work begins. Never give a blanket approval to do vehicle service unless you trust the shop completely. You may end up with most costly service available.
Keep the owner’s manual handy. It can provide guidelines on the specific service intervals for your vehicle. Following the manual can prevent an annoyance from turning into a major problem.
