Rakuten, an international e-commerce business based in Japan, has announced that it will be accepting bitcoin as payment for its goods. This integration will initially take place in the United States, and will be followed by integration in Germany and Austria.
The company is accepting bitcoin through Bitnet, which will allow Rakuten to add bitcoin as a payment option on its checkout page.
Rakuten’s bitcoin acceptance makes the company one of the larges e-commerce businesses to integrate bitcoin into its payment options, which “offers consumers enhanced security, privacy, and convenience,” according to Rakuten.
From Yaz Iida, president of Rakuten USA:
“Rakuten’s mission is to empower the world through the Internet. This is one of the reasons why we invested in Bitnet last year and we look forward to working with them on our US marketplace.”
