Lamborghini bets on India’s new rich to drive growth

NEW DELHI: Italian sports car maker Lamborghini is counting on India’s rapidly-rising number of millionaires and billionaires for future growth. A group company of embattled German car major Volkswagen, Lamborghini currently gets a minuscule number from India – it sold 16 cars in the country in 2014 on total global sales of 2,530 units -but identifies it as a market to watch out for, especially as it awaits the launch of its first SUV, the Urus, in 2018.

“India holds a lot of value for us, and the importance will only grow stronger as we go ahead,” Pavan Setty, the head of Lamborghini in India, told TOI here.

The company’s confidence on the Indian market is clearly evident from the fact that it launched the ‘Huracan LP580-2’ (two-door, two-seat sports coupe) model here within days of its unveiling at LA Auto Show. “The launch here is even quicker than China,” Setty said.

Lamborghini’s India portfolio starts from Rs 3 crore (for the Huracan) and runs up to nearly Rs 6 crore for the Aventador (ex-showroom Delhi). Setty rues the “exceptionally high import duty” on vehicles. “This needs to be moderated.”
