Mahesh Babu unveils sub-Rs. 10,000 smartphone


The second largest mobile phone maker, Intex Technologies, has expressed confidence that it will touch the 15 million mark in smartphone sales in the current fiscal, up from seven million last financial year.

The director of Intex, Keshav Bansal, said that against an overall 20 million handsets that the company had sold in the last fiscal, his target this year was 30 million units. The company’s brand ambassador, Telugu film actor Mahesh Babu, launched its latest sub-Rs. 10,000 Aqua Trend smartphone , here on Monday.

Mr. Mahesh Babu said he was honoured to be associated with a company like Intex for a period of one year and said the smartphone was truly value-for-money with attractive features. Mr. Bansal said Mr. Mahesh Babu was a youth icon and that was what made them zero in on him as brand ambassador.

Mr. Bansal also said that the company would start commercial production at its all-new 5{+t}{+h}manufacturing plant in Noida in about six to eight months. It presently has four units – two in Jammu, one in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh and one in Noida.

With an investment of Rs. 1,500 crore, the two million sq ft facility will have an installed capacity to make 3.5 million phones a month. Also, the zero-debt company is planning to invest Rs. 500 crore on research and development, apart from Rs. 300 crore on marketing.

He said the mobile phone business contributed to about 80 per cent of the company’s revenue, with the rest made up by consumer durables, including LED television sets, washing machines and other information technology products. The company’s Head-Mobile Business, Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, said they were working on another sub-Rs. 10,000 powered by Sailish, an operating system developed by Jolla, the Finnish firm.
