Samsung skipped Z2 and went straight on to announce the new Tizen smartphone Z3 today. The device will be priced at Rs 8,490 and will go on sale on Indian retailer Snapdeal this month. It will be offered in gold, black and silver colour variants.
The Z3 features with a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display and is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor along with a 1GB of RAM under the hood. It includes an internal storage of 8GB and can be further expanded up to 128GB.
The device comes equipped with an 8MP rear camera along with a 5MP front facing camera. The phone runs Tizen 2.4, the final version of which is debuting on the device. It gets advanced selfie capabilities such as ‘Automatic Selfie’ mode with facial recognition, ‘Beauty Face’ mode that automatically retouches images for flawless skin and also ‘Wide Selfie’ mode to capture up to 120 degrees angle for that perfect group selfie shot. It has a 2,600 mAh battery and features Samsung’s Ultra Power Saving Mode, which disables all but the most basic functions to increase battery life when you really need it.
The Z3 also comes with the Ultra Data Saving Mode feature that was introduced with the Galaxy J2. This mode lets users save on data costs by compressing all incoming and outgoing internet traffic. As the Z3 is targeted at the Indian market, it comes pre-loaded with Samsung’s My Galaxy and Mix Radio apps for free region-specific content.
My Galaxy is said to be a unique consumer engagement platform, which offers consumers differentiated value added services related to music, recharge, travel, movies, fashion and more. With Mix Radio on Samsung Z3, the company will offer access to thousands of curated mixes from a catalogue of over 30 million songs. Samsung Z3 takes forward the specially Made for India Ultra Power Saving (UPS) mode that was introduced on the first Tizen smartphone, Samsung Z1. The UPS mode allows users to operate on standby for over a day even with less than 10 percent of battery remaining.

Tizen joins the list of alternate OSes, like Ubuntu, Firefox and so on, that are looking to eat into Android’s market share. Over the years, Google has honed the skills of its Android mobile OS. Tizen comes across as a newbie with lack of refined features and mediocre apps store.
The Tizen mobile OS is also lighter than Android – the reason why Android was ditched for Tizen – and can run on low-end phones, a market Samsung is now trying to woo. In fact, Google had to craft a separate Android Wear OS for wearables. The Tizen isn’t just for phones, and the company has started employing it in multiple products like wearables and TVs.
Samsung’s India R&D engineers have developed My Galaxy, Mix Radio, Ultra Data and Power Saving modes, Special Days UX and Enhanced Messaging, especially for Indian consumers.
